OSWALD WEST

90 Minutes outside of downtown Portland, and just a few minutes south of the popular tourist town of Cannon Beach, is Oswald West State Park.

Most people visiting Oswald West come for the surfing on Short Sands Beach, just a short walk from the parking lot. But if you have the energy, and don’t mind a little bushwhacking, and probably a little mud to be honest, you can take a trail to a beautiful and rugged cove. Some days there are sea lions on the beach, some days you can spot the resident grey whales, and some days you are completely alone.

But on this day, the beautiful colors of the ocean overshadowed any wildlife. With the smell of the ocean in your nose and the breeze filling your hair, one could stand here for hours and watch the amazing colors of the water and the forest. We finally turned around when my trusty trail dog got bored of the view. I never forgot the colors of the ocean that day though, and now this landscape has inspired many bracelets and earrings.
